Artist's Comments

I have been getting into watercolor now that I work at Daniel Smith. Their watercolors are super awesome, and I want to start stacking up some paintings of koi and other fish or animals to sell, particularly bettas and koi. If you have any commissions, I welcome them heartily!

I didn't use a particular one photo for this... I kind of just made the water up according to what I know about it and the position of the fish, and what the watercolors felt like doing, but I looked at pictures of koi for reference of their types. There's a tancho sanke, a golden ogon, and... that really popular type. I'll remember it later, I'm sure.

I don't suppose I could get some advice on painting from you? I apparently suck at it, but I'd like to be at least decent.

Dude, come on over sometime and we can paint together! I'm moving tomorrow, so sometime after then, bring your stuff other and we can mess with paint. the watercolors are so much different, this is only my second or third pure watercolor piece since junior high. The paints are totally different and basically, anything you know about acrylic, reverse it, and you have the rules for watercolor. For example:

1. Let the paints dry on the palatte and moisten them to use them! Don't throw the old paint away.

2. Don't overmix. You don't want an even tone generally, because it loses life and looks flat.

3. Use the white of the paper... don't use white paint.

4. I used a glazing technique for this... layers and layers. Let one layer dry before adding another, though you can work wet-on-wet depending on what kind of look you want.

5. Transparency=good, and granulation can be good, too.

Yay!

How will you get better if you let your current skills when you just start dissuade you from trying again? ;P
